Heather Molnarspecializes in low maintenance hair color, from hair painting to blending gray, and aims for seamlessness to allow clients to love their hair the entire period between services. She uses the word effortless to describe her natural and blended work. At home, she is married to a man who also loves working with his hands, and they have 2 dogs. We caught up with her at Genesis Salon in Charleston, South Carolina, to get a glimpse into her world and talk more about her passion for hair color and decision to join a booth rental salon.
Where are you from originally?
I’m from Greenville, South Carolina. I lived there until about 5 years ago when I moved down to Charleston with my now husband.
How long have you been doing hair?
I’ve been cutting hair for a little over seven years, and I just started coloring about 4 years ago.
How did you get involved in hairdressing?
Funny story: I got involved because beauty school was quick (only 10 months) and I work well with my hands, but it wasn’t until I started coloring hair that my passion for it grew. Before, it was just a job that I ended being good at, but now it’s all I think about.
Tell us about your salon and how you ended up working there.
Genesis is a booth rental salon, and I have a friend who has worked here since they opened a little over a year ago, and she’d been trying to convince me to come into the world of booth renting from commission. I finally made the jump and never looked back. It’s so awesome to be able to use products that I like. I love it.
What do you love most about being a hairdresser?
The relationships. I do a lot of low maintenance hair color so I get to see a lot of different people, and build relationships with a lot of different people, which I think is awesome. I’ve been doing some clients’ hair for 4 years, and it’s really cool to see how their lives change: Marriages, and babies, and cutting their kids’ hair. It’s really great to have clients who turn into friends, and I get to be creative as well.
What is your favorite Hairstory product, and why? How did you find us?
My favorite product from the Hairstory line is New Wash. I love the smell, and how soft yet manageable it makes my hair feel! Aside from that, I personally love Hair Balm. I have natural wave, so thanks to New Wash and Hair Balm my hair has never been more defined and frizz-free, a feat that I could never achieve with a slew of other products.
I was first introduced to Hairstory through Kami Brown, an ex-coworker whom I greatly look up to and respect, as she uses and carries the line in her studio. The idea intrigued me at the time, but I never looked into it further until Emily Gilbert [on the Hairstory sales team] contacted me through my Instagram account and wanted to know if I'd like to do a trial of New Wash. Of course I said yes! Before the bottle came, I went to Kami's studio and purchased Dressed Up and Hair Balm because if I was going to try New Wash, I was going all in. I was hooked!! A month after using it on myself, and loving my hair for the first time ever, I decided to make the switch in the salon, and exclusively use as well as retail Hairstory to my clients.
Your work is very natural and soft. Is there a reason you gravitate toward hair painting?
Thank you! I love naturally colored hair so much because of the low maintenance. I aim to attract clients who care about their hair, want it to look great, but don't want to spend every month or two in the salon. Getting your hair colored is an investment, and I feel satisfied when my clients love their color all the way up until their next appointment! I get the warm fuzzies when they haven't been in the salon in 3 to 4 months and tell me that they're still getting compliments. Plus I truly enjoy hair painting! It feels very artistic and creative, which makes me happy.
Lastly, are you cutting hair at all anymore, or just doing color?
I do still cut hair! Textured cuts are my favorite to create. I enjoy cutting, but coloring definitely has my heart right now.
